Compact parallel double clutch unit

A double clutch unit for a transmission comprising:

• an engine side friction clutch pack, ES clutch pack and a gearbox side friction clutch pack, GS clutch pack;
• a clutch input shaft having an axis of rotation;
• and
• an axial liquid distributor (ALD) configured to transport at least one liquid in an axial direction between the engine side of the clutch input shaft and a location towards the gearbox side of the clutch input shaft,
• wherein:
• each clutch pack has a clutch pack input and a clutch pack output,
• the clutch packs are disposed in a parallel arrangement axially flanking a common clutch reaction plate,
• each clutch pack input is central of the clutch pack output such that torque is transmitted across each activated clutch pack in a central to peripheral direction,
• the ALD comprises a plurality of axial liquid distributor, ALD conduits, each for the transport of liquid in an axial direction,
• a first ALD conduit of the plurality of ALD conduits services both an ES clutch pack piston balancing chamber and one or more GS cooling channels for providing cooling liquid to the GS clutch pack,
• a second ALD of the plurality of ALD conduits, different from the first ALD conduit, services both a GS clutch pack piston balancing chamber and one or more ES cooling channels for providing cooling liquid to the ES clutch pack, and
• the plurality of axial liquid distributor, ALD conduits, are disposed central of the ES clutch pack piston balancing chamber and of the GS clutch pack piston balancing chamber when viewed in on an axial projection of the double clutch unit.
