Dual function latch assembly and retractable striker and/or retractable ratchet assembly for dual door pillar-less door system and method of operation thereof

A retractable ratchet assembly for a closure system of a motor vehicle having at least one closure panel movable between open and closed positions relative to a vehicle body of the motor vehicle, the retractable ratchet assembly comprising:

• a pair of ratchets for releasably engaging with a striker assembly, said retractable ratchet assembly being movable along a ratchet translation axis between an extended position, whereat the at least one closure panel is maintained in a closed position with the retractable ratchet assembly engaged with the striker assembly, and a retracted position, whereat the at least one closure panel is free to be moved to an open position with the retractable ratchet assembly disengaged from the striker assembly;
• wherein the pair of ratchets are configured for scissor-like movement between a striker capture position, whereat a common striker of the striker assembly is releasably captured simultaneously between the pair of ratchets, and a striker release position,
• whereat the common striker of the striker assembly can be removed from between the pair of ratchets, wherein during movement along the ratchet translation axis the pair of ratchets undergo the scissor-like movement.
