Abstract
The present invention relates to glassy solids which are obtainable by carbonation of a solid glassy precursor, said glassy precursor having a SiO2 content of at least 65 wt. %. The invention further relates to a mechanochemically carbonated glassy solid and methods of its production. The invention further relates to uses of the (mechanochemically carbonated) glassy solid, for example as a filler. The invention further relates to compositions comprising the (mechanochemically carbonated) glassy solid and a further material selected from the group consisting of asphalt, cement, geopolymer, polymers and combinations thereof. The invention further relates to a method of preparing concrete.

A carbonated glassy solid which is obtainable by carbonation of a solid glassy precursor, said glassy precursor having a SiO2 content of at least 65 wt. % (by total weight of the glassy precursor) and a total carbon content of at least 0.1 wt. %.
A method for producing a mechanochemically carbonated glassy solid, said method comprising the following steps:
- a) providing a feedstock comprising or consisting of a solid glassy precursor;
- b) providing a gas comprising CO2;
- c) introducing said feedstock and said gas into a mechanical agitation unit;
- and
- d) subjecting the material of said feedstock to a mechanical agitation operation in the presence of said gas in said mechanical agitation unit to obtain the mechanochemically carbonated glassy solid.
