Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to devices, kits, and methods for treating lumbar spinal stenosis by at least partially decompressing a compressed nerve root. The method can include identifying the compressed nerve root and percutaneously accessing a region of a lamina located adjacent to the compressed nerve root. The method can also include forming a channel through the region of the lamina, wherein the channel can be formed medial to a lateral border of the lamina. Further, the method can include expanding the channel in a lateral direction.
Claims20
An access portal for use in a percutaneous spinal procedure, the access portal comprising:
- a housing comprising a body and an actuator;
- a first elongate member having a lumen and configured to receive a first docking pin, a proximal end of the first elongate member being coupled to the housing;
- a second elongate member having a lumen and configured to receive a second docking pin, a proximal end of the second elongate member being coupled to the housing;
- and
- a third elongate member having a lumen configured to receive a surgical instrument, a proximal end of the third elongate member being moveably coupled to the housing,
- wherein the third elongate member is moveable laterally relative to the first elongate member and the second elongate member such that a longitudinal axis of the third elongate member is translatable in at least one lateral direction relative to longitudinal axes of the first elongate member and the second elongate member, and
- wherein the actuator is configured to selectively fix a position of the third elongate member relative to the body and allow lateral movement of the third elongate member relative to the body.
A surgical access device comprising:
- a first elongate member having a first lumen configured to receive a first docking pin;
- a second elongate member having a second lumen configured to receive a second docking pin;
- a third elongate member having a third lumen configured to receive a surgical tool;
- a housing coupling the first, second, and third elongate members, wherein the third elongate member is laterally movable relative to the first and second elongate members while maintaining a parallel orientation thereto;
- and
- a depth guide adjuster coupled to the housing and configured to control a depth of insertion of the surgical tool through the third lumen.
A surgical system comprising:
- a surgical access device comprising:
- a first elongate member having a first lumen configured to receive a first docking pin, a second elongate member having a second lumen configured to receive a second docking pin, a third elongate member having a third lumen configured to receive a surgical tool, a housing coupling the first, second, and third elongate members, wherein the third elongate member is laterally movable relative to the first elongate member and the second elongate member while maintaining a parallel orientation thereto, and a depth guide adjuster coupled to the housing and configured to control a depth of insertion of the surgical tool through the third lumen;
- a bone rongeur comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the shaft comprising a lumen extending therethrough and the distal end comprising a cutting component configured to cut bone, a rod positioned within the lumen of the shaft and movable longitudinally relative to the shaft, a cavity on a distal end of the rod, the cavity configured to receive a portion of the bone, and a hook on the distal end of the rod, the hook configured to contact an anterior surface of the bone, wherein the shaft is configured to rotate relative to the rod to remove the portion of bone received in the cavity;
- and
- a template configured to position the first docking pin and the second docking pin relative to a lamina, the template comprising openings for the first docking pin and the second docking pin and alignment indicia for anatomical landmarks.
