Abstract
Systems and methods for communication in 4G and 5G broadband satellite networks are provided. The disclosed methods include Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-independent methods, and GNSS assisted methods that do not require transmission of satellite ephemeris information from a base station to user equipment.
Claims20
A method for communication with a terminal device in a broadband network comprising a base station, the method comprising:
- performing, iteratively at the base station in each of several successive and partially overlapping observation windows that are separated by a length corresponding to a cyclic prefix of a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble, a PRACH preamble detection operation;
- receiving, from the terminal device and based on the PRACH preamble detection operation, a PRACH preamble, the PRACH preamble partially filling one or more of the partially overlapping observation windows and entirely filling an observation window of the partially overlapping observation windows;
- determining a differential delay corresponding to the terminal device based on the observation window that is entirely filled with the PRACH preamble;
- and
- performing, using the determined differential delay, subsequent communications between the base station and the terminal device.

A base station, comprising:
- a processor configured to:
- receive, from a terminal device, a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble, the PRACH preamble partially filling one or more of partially overlapping observation windows and entirely filling an observation window of the partially overlapping observation windows;
- determine, using the PRACH preamble, a differential delay corresponding to the terminal device based on the observation window that is entirely filled with the PRACH preamble;
- and
- perform, using the determined differential delay, subsequent communications with the terminal device.
2 more elements
A terminal device, comprising:
- a processor configured to:
- provide, to a base station, a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble in a first transmission;
- receive, from the base station and in response to providing the PRACH preamble, a timing advance, the timing advance based on a delay between the terminal device and the base station;
- and
- apply the timing advance to a second transmission to the base station, wherein the timing advance shifts a start of the second transmission prior to a scheduled transmit time such that the second transmission arrives at the base station at the scheduled transmit time.
