Abstract
A hammer for an impact tool includes a main body, a hammer lug including an impact surface configured to engage and apply impacts to a corresponding impact surface on an anvil of the impact tool, and a hardened layer formed on the impact surface, the hardened layer having a higher surface hardness than a remaining portion of the hammer.
Claims20
A hammer for an impact tool, the hammer comprising:
- a main body;
- a hammer lug including an impact surface configured to engage and apply impacts to a corresponding impact surface on an anvil of the impact tool;
- and
- a hardened layer formed on the impact surface, the hardened layer having a higher surface hardness than a remaining portion of the hammer.

An impact tool comprising:
- a housing;
- a motor supported within the housing;
- and
- an impact mechanism including a camshaft driven by the motor, a hammer coupled to the camshaft, and an anvil,
- wherein the hammer includes
- a main body;
- a hammer lug including an impact surface configured to engage and apply impacts to a corresponding impact surface on the anvil, and
- a hammer hardened layer formed on the impact surface, the hammer hardened layer having a higher surface hardness than a remaining portion of the hammer;
- wherein the anvil includes
- an impact receiving portion at an end of the anvil, the impact receiving portion including an anvil lug having the impact surface that receives impacts from the hammer lug,
- a shank portion extending from the impact receiving portion,
- a drive portion located at an end of the shank portion opposite from the impact receiving portion, the drive portion including a plurality of drive surfaces configured to engage a tool bit, and
- an anvil hardened layer formed on at least one of the drive portion or the impact receiving surface, the anvil hardened layer having a higher surface hardness than a remaining portion of the anvil.
10 more elements
A hammer for an impact tool, the hammer comprising:
- a main body;
- a hammer lug including an impact surface configured to engage and apply impacts to a corresponding impact surface on an anvil of the impact tool,
- wherein the hammer lug includes a region having compressive residual stresses;
- and
- wherein the compressive residual stresses are imparted to the region by a laser peening process.
