Abstract
A system and method that may include receiving real-time downhole data from one or more sensors of a drillstring disposed in a borehole in a subsurface geologic region during a directional drilling operation. The system and method also include selecting a drillstring drilling mode from a plurality of drillstring drilling modes. The system and method may additionally include predicting, in real-time, characteristics of a hole bottom of the borehole using the drilling mode model and at least a portion of the real-time downhole data. The system and method may further include controlling the directional drilling operation using one or more of the characteristics.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- operating a controller that controls directional drilling equipment to extend a borehole in a subsurface environment using a selected drilling mode;
- operating an adaptive filter framework for automatic detection of the selected drilling mode;
- responsive to the automatic detection of the selected drilling mode, automatically adapting the adaptive filter framework by selecting a filter from a number of different filters;
- operating the adaptive filter framework using the selected filter to generate a hole bottom characteristic for the borehole using sensor data;
- and
- further operating the controller using the hole bottom characteristic to control the directional drilling equipment to extend the borehole in a desired direction.
A system comprising:
- one or more processors;
- memory accessible to at least one of the one or more processors;
- processor-executable instructions stored in the memory and executable to instruct the system to:
- operate a controller that controls directional drilling equipment to extend a borehole in a subsurface environment using a selected drilling mode;
- operate an adaptive filter framework for automatic detection of the selected drilling mode;
- responsive to the automatic detection of the selected drilling mode, automatically adapt the adaptive filter framework by selecting a filter from a number of different filters;
- operate the adaptive filter framework using the selected filter to generate a hole bottom characteristic for the borehole using sensor data;
- and
- further operate the controller using the hole bottom characteristic to control the directional drilling equipment to extend the borehole in a desired direction.
One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media comprising processor-executable instructions to instruct a computing system to:
- operate a controller that controls directional drilling equipment to extend a borehole in a subsurface environment using a selected drilling mode;
- operate an adaptive filter framework for automatic detection of the selected drilling mode;
- responsive to the automatic detection of the selected drilling mode, automatically adapt the adaptive filter framework by selecting a filter from a number of different filters;
- operate the adaptive filter framework using the selected filter to generate a hole bottom characteristic for the borehole using sensor data;
- and
- further operate the controller using the hole bottom characteristic to control the directional drilling equipment to extend the borehole in a desired direction.
