The present invention relates to the use of Antithrombin in the treatment of stroke.

A method for treating a stroke comprising administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising antithrombin,
- wherein the antithrombin is administered at a dose sufficient to:
- increase the patient's plasmatic antithrombin activity to greater than about 120%;
- or
- increase the patient's plasmatic antithrombin concentration to greater than about 1.2 IU/mL.
