A catadioptric optical system including a first lens having a first curved surface; a reflective polarizer on the first curved surface of the first lens; a second lens having a curved surface facing the first lens and a substantially flat surface facing away from the first lens; a quarter waveplate on the substantially flat surface of the second lens; and a third lens.

A catadioptric optical system comprising:
- a first lens having a first curved surface and a second curved surface;
- a reflective polarizer on the second curved surface of the first lens;
- a second lens having a curved surface facing second curved surface of the first lens and a substantially flat surface facing away from the first lens;
- and
- a third lens having a first surface facing the second lens and a second surface facing away from the second lens,
- wherein the second lens is between the first lens and the third lens.
