A method of operating a target detection radar following a first mode of operation and at least one second mode of operation, the first mode of operation being a synthetic aperture radar imaging mode and each second mode of operation being different from the first mode of operation, the method comprising several recurrences of signal emission/reception, wherein for each N, the Nth recurrence comprises:
- generating a sequence of consecutive pulses, each pulse of the sequence being associated with the first mode of operation or the at least one second mode of operation;
- emitting the pulses in different frequency bands, wherein at least one of the pulses, called the out of phase pulse, is emitted with a random phase associated with the number N;
- and
- receiving in a common time window echoes of the pulses.
