This invention provides, but is not limited to, novel oleanolic acid derivatives having the formula: wherein the variables are defined herein. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions, kits and articles of manufacture comprising such compounds, methods and intermediates useful for making the compounds, and methods of using the compounds and compositions.

A method for preparing a compound of Formula (I):

- wherein the method comprises reacting the C-17 carboxylic acid group of a compound of Formula (II):
- with a reagent under conditions suitable to form the compound of Formula (I).
A method for preparing a compound of Formula (III):
- or a salt thereof,
- wherein the method comprises modifying the C-17 acyl azide group of a compound of Formula (I):
- under conditions suitable to form the compound of Formula (III).
A method for preparing a compound of Formula (IV):
- or a salt thereof,
- wherein the method comprises modifying the C-17 isocyanate group of a compound of Formula (III):
