Abstract
Systems to induce current flow in a circuit formed by intersecting molten metal streams are provided. The systems involve induction type electromagnetic pumps that produce each molten metal stream. In some embodiments, the current induced through the molten metal streams is induction current.
Claims5
A system comprising two electromagnetic pumps, wherein each electromagnetic pump is configured to produce a stream of molten metal from one or more molten metal reservoirs;
- and the streams of molten metal intersect;
- wherein each electromagnetic pump comprises:
- a) an inlet having an open-end conduit for insertion into molten metal in the one or more molten metal reservoirs to permit the flow of molten metal into the electromagnetic pump;
- b) a pump tube having an outlet diameter through which a stream of molten metal is produced;
- c) a loop through which the molten metal flows between the inlet riser and the pump tube;
- d) a transformer winding circuit that creates a time varying magnetic field through the molten metal in the loop to create a current in the molten metal in the loop;
- and
- e) an electromagnet that produces a time varying magnetic field perpendicular to a portion of the current in loop to produce a Lorentz force on the molten metal to induce exit through the outlet diameter to produce the molten metal stream and an electromagnetic transverse to the current;
- and
- a source of electrical power configured to supply a current through the intersecting streams of molten metal.
