Abstract
Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, predicting dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) path outage prediction and recommendation of alternate communication paths. Parameterized DWDM signals are launched, and resulting network characteristics are determined. The parameters and characteristics are used to train one or more machine learning models subsequently used to predict outages and recommend alternate paths. Other embodiments are disclosed.

A device, comprising:
- a processing system including a processor;
- and
- a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
- determining a network topology in a fiber network by utilizing a topology engine that collects and visualizes an entire network structure, including an identification of nodes, links, and hops, and assessing a connectivity and redundancy of network elements, wherein the network topology comprises a plurality of network elements;
- determining all possible paths between pairs of network elements in the plurality of network elements, wherein each path is defined by a sequence of network elements and fiber links, and a computation considers a number of hops;
- selecting dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) signal parameter values for a set of DWDM signal parameters;
- applying the DWDM signal parameter values to create parameterized DWDM signals on the all possible paths between the pairs of network elements of the plurality of network elements;
- measuring optical characteristics at one or more of the plurality of network elements resulting in measured optical characteristics of the fiber network;
- building a database using the set of DWDM signal parameter values and the measured optical characteristics of the fiber network;
- and
- predicting, using the database, an outage on at least one of the all possible paths between the pairs of network elements, wherein the predicting is based on a threshold analysis of signal degradation metrics and historical outage data to proactively identify potential failures before they occur.
