Abstract
A survey system and method to improve one or more of survey quality, efficiency, and utility for example by utilizing a vessel mounted MBES and a selected survey plan to check sound speed(s) via eliciting echoes from reflectors in colocated groups of reflectors using multi-perspective ensonification.
Claims20
A multi-perspective sonar method comprising the steps of:
- ensonifying from different perspectives each of multiple areas (A1 . . . An) having a zone Z in common;
- locating reflectors in Z and their estimated depths via ray tracing;
- using locations of the reflectors to find collocated groups (g1 . . . gn) of reflectors;
- for each group gx of collocated reflectors, characterizing disagreement among the group's reflector depth estimates;
- and,
- utilizing a numerical minimization technique to find one or more sound speeds that minimize reflector depth estimate disagreements.

A multi-perspective sonar comprising:
- from different perspectives, projectors for ensonifying each of multiple areas (A1 . . . An) having a common zone Z;
- hydrophones for receiving echoes from reflectors in Z and ray tracing using one or more sound speed estimates for locating these reflectors and their estimated depths;
- reflector locations used to find (g1 . . . gn) groups of collocated reflectors;
- for each group gx the disagreement among depth estimates is characterized;
- and,
- a numerical minimization technique used to find one or more sound speeds that minimize depth disagreements.
