Abstract
This invention relates to a method and apparatus for gasifying or liquifying coal. In particular, the method comprises reacting a coal with a molten aluminum or aluminum alloy bath. The apparatus includes a reaction vessel for carrying out the reaction, as well as other equipment necessary for capturing and removing the reaction products. Further, the process can be used to cogenerate electricity using the excess heat generated by the process.
Claims10
A reaction vessel for reacting coal particles with molten metal, the reaction vessel comprising:
- a reaction vessel wall containing a molten metal within the reaction vessel;
- a metal feed line passing through to the reaction vessel wall configured to supply the molten metal;
- a coal injection line passing through the reaction vessel wall and having an outlet in the reaction vessel and configured to mix precursor coal into the molten metal to produce one or more liquefied products;
- and
- one or more collection lines each passing through the reaction vessel wall at a lower portion of the reaction vessel.
