Abstract
Provided herein are methods and compositions for determining and reporting carbon dioxide sequestered and/or carbon dioxide avoided in operations involving concrete, including concrete raw material transport, concrete production, and concrete use.

1-29. (canceled)
A method for determining a decrease in carbon dioxide attributable to a first batch of concrete treated with carbon dioxide at a first concrete batching site, compared to an untreated batch of concrete, comprising
- (i) determining an amount of carbon dioxide avoided by the first batch of concrete treated with carbon dioxide by determining
- (a) a weight of cement avoided in the first batch by comparing a weight of cement supplied by a first cement supplier and used in the first batch of concrete treated with carbon dioxide to historical data for weight of cement in batches with the same mix design but not treated with carbon dioxide;
- (b) for the avoided weight of cement determined in (a),
- 1) determining an amount of carbon dioxide from cement production avoided by multiplying the weight of cement avoided by an amount of carbon dioxide production per unit of cement,
- 2) determining an amount of carbon dioxide from cement transport avoided by multiplying the weight of cement avoided by carbon dioxide production per unit distance and unit weight of transport, for a distance that the cement supplier is from the location of first concrete batching site, and
- (c) summing (b)(1) and (2) to determine an amount of carbon dioxide avoided in the first batch of concrete.
A method of producing an average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that is updated according to real-world conditions comprising
- (i) providing an initial EPD validation for a concrete mix design;
- (ii) determining decrease in carbon dioxide attributable to a plurality of batches of concrete of the first concrete mix design treated with carbon dioxide;
- and
- (iii) adjusting the EPD based on the results of (ii) to produce an average production EPD for the mix design.
A method for constructing a carbon-reduced structure, comprising:
- (i) creating a construction structure comprising a carbon-reduced concrete according to a construction plan, wherein the carbon-reduced concrete is produced at a facility that carbonates the concrete and/or one or more components of the concrete;
- (ii) calculating an amount of carbon dioxide sequestered and/or avoided by the carbon-reduced concrete compared to the same concrete without carbonation;
- and (iii) calculating a total amount of carbon dioxide sequestered and/or avoided for the carbon-reduced structure based, at least in part, on the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered and/or avoided by the reduced-carbon concrete used in the structure.
A method of providing a visual representation of carbon dioxide avoided and/or sequestered due to production and/or use of concrete that comprises one or more batches of carbonated concrete from one or more concrete batching sites, comprising
- (i) providing a processor with information regarding
- (a) weight of cement avoided in the one or more batches of carbonated concrete;
- (b) weight of aggregates added to replace cement avoided in the one or more batches of concrete
- (c) amount of carbon dioxide delivered to the one or more batches of concrete;
- (d) carbon dioxide cost of producing the carbon dioxide;
- (e) locations of suppliers of cement, carbon dioxide, and/or aggregate for the carbonated concrete
- (f) carbon dioxide cost per unit distance and unit weight for transport of the cement, carbon dioxide, and/or aggregate to one or more locations where the one or more batches of carbonated concrete are produced;
- (ii) processing the information to determine amount of carbon dioxide avoided and/or sequestered due to production and use of the carbonated concrete;
- and
- (iii) providing a visual display to a user of the amounts determined in (ii) and/or further information derived, at least in part, from the amounts determined in (ii).
