Abstract
The present invention includes novel, low porosity, functionalized carbon micro-powders derived from natural sugars and methods for producing them.
Claims15
An oxygen functionalized carbon micro-powder characterized in having four or more of the following properties:
- a) a carbon content of from 65 to 95% and an oxygen content of 35 to 5% on a weight basis;
- b) a specific surface area of less than 500 m2/g (BET method);
- c) percent crystallinity of 5% to 75% (XRD method);
- d) the particles have a platelet morphology with aspect ratios greater than 5:1;
- e) the particles have significant curvature such that they are not planar;
- and
- f) the particles have a smooth, non-porous appearance at 1,000× magnification by SEM.
4 more elements
An oxygen functionalized carbon micro-powder produced by dehydration of a naturally occurring sugar by a process comprising the following steps:
- a) mixing the sugar with concentrated strong acid to effect partial dehydration to a predominantly carbon material;
- b) rinsing the carbon material with water to remove the acid;
- c) drying the material to remove free water;
- and
- d) grinding or milling the carbon material to obtain a micro-powder;
- wherein the carbon micro powder is characterized in having four or more of the following properties:
- i) a carbon content of from 65 to 95% and an oxygen content of 35 to 5% on a weight basis;
- ii) a specific surface area of less than 500 m2/g (BET method);
- iii) percent crystallinity of 5% to 75% (XRD method);
- iv) the particles have a platelet morphology with aspect ratios greater than 5:1;
- v) the particles have significant curvature such that they are not planar;
- and
- vi) the particles have a smooth, non-porous appearance at 1,000× magnification by SEM.
