## Abstract

An enclosure and a method for forming an enclosure are disclosed. The enclosure may be formed from metal, such as aluminum, and further include a non-metal portion allowing for transmission and receipt of electromagnetic waves. The non-metal portion may be interlocked to the enclosure and in particular, to a region within the enclosure including a first material having a relatively high strength and stiffness compared to the non-metal portion. Interlocking means may include forming dovetail cuts into the enclosure to receive the non-metal portion, a hole or cavity drilled into the enclosure which includes internal threads, and a rod inserted into the first material to provide a tension to the non-metal portion. Methods of assembling internal components using anodization are also disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An enclosure, comprising:
a first region formed in an interior portion of the enclosure, the first region comprising a first material;
a second region formed in an exterior portion of the enclosure, the second region comprising a second material different than the first material;
a protrusion integrally formed with the enclosure, the protrusion extending through the first material; and
means for interlocking the second material to the first material, wherein the first material engages the second material to define an interface region.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The enclosure of claim 1, wherein the means for interlocking the second material to the first material comprises a cavity, wherein the second material is molded into the cavity.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The enclosure of claim 2, wherein the cavity comprises an internal threaded region.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The enclosure of claim 3, wherein the second material comprises a shape corresponding to the cavity and the internal threaded region.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The enclosure of claim 1, wherein the first material includes a material selected from a group consisting of metal or glass.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The enclosure of claim 5, further comprising a rod member inserted first material, the rod member providing a tension to secure the second material to the enclosure.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The enclosure of claim 1, further comprising a sidewall, wherein the second material extends into the sidewall, the second material comprising an extension that extends into the sidewall.

### Claim 8

A method for assembling an electronic device, the method comprising:
removing a first region of material in an interior portion of an enclosure;
filling the first region with a first material;
removing a second region of material in an exterior portion of the enclosure, the exterior portion opposite the interior portion;
filling the second region with a second material different from the first material; and
interlocking the second material to the first material.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, further comprising removing a portion of the first material prior to filling the second region with the second material.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, further comprising:
forming a cavity in the second region, the cavity having an internal threaded region; and
filling the cavity and the internal threaded region with the second material.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, further comprising inserting a rod within the first material, the rod configured to tension the second material.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, further comprising forming an anodized region, the anodized region providing a guide for assembling an internal component.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising removing a portion of the anodized region to define a second guide and an electrical grounding path for the internal component.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the first material includes aluminum or glass, and wherein the second material includes plastic.

### Claim 15

An enclosure of an electronic device, the enclosure having an interior portion that receives an internal component and an exterior portion that defines an outer region of the enclosure, comprising:
a first sidewall;
a second sidewall opposite the first sidewall;
a first region formed in the interior portion, the first region extending from the first sidewall to the second sidewall and comprising a first material within the first region;
a second region formed in the exterior portion, the second region extending from the first sidewall to the second sidewall and comprising a second material within the second region;
a cavity that receives at least some of the second material; and
wherein the first material is engaged with the second material.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The enclosure of claim 15, wherein the second material extends along an opening of the first sidewall and an opening of the second sidewall, the second material comprising an extension that extends into the first sidewall.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The enclosure of claim 16, wherein the extension extends into the first material.

### Claim 18 (depends on 15)

The enclosure of claim 15, wherein the first material and the second material arc free of metal.

### Claim 19 (depends on 15)

The enclosure of claim 15, wherein the first sidewall comprises an extension that extends into the second material.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The enclosure of claim 15, wherein the first material comprises a rod member formed from a ceramic material.
