Abstract
Embodiments of resonator circuits and modulating resonators and are described generally herein. One or more acoustic wave resonators may be coupled in series or parallel to generate tunable filters. One or more acoustic wave resonances may be modulated by one or more capacitors or tunable capacitors. One or more acoustic wave modules may also be switchable in a filter. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

(canceled)
A tunable resonator network, comprising:
- a first resonator stage, including:
- a first acoustic wave resonator (AWR);
- and
- a first tunable capacitor module coupled to the first AWR, the first tunable capacitor module including a first plurality of variable capacitors selectable for modifying at least one of:
- a resonant frequency (RFA1) of the first AWR;
- or
- an anti-resonant frequency (AFA1) of the first AWR;
- a second resonator stage, coupled to the first resonator stage, including:
- a second acoustic wave resonator (AWR);
- and
- a second tunable capacitor module coupled to the second AWR, the second tunable capacitor module including a second plurality of variable capacitors selectable for modifying at least one of:
- a resonant frequency (RFA2) of the second AWR;
- or
- an anti-resonant frequency (AFA2) of the second AWR;
- a switching network configured to dynamically enable or disable capacitors in the first tunable capacitor module and the second tunable capacitor module, thereby adjusting frequency response characteristics of the tunable resonator network;
- wherein the switching network enables different capacitor configurations, thereby expanding the tunable frequency range beyond that of each individual resonator stage.

A tunable resonator system, comprising:
- a first resonator module including a first acoustic wave resonator (AWR) arranged in series with a first switch, the first AWR having a resonant frequency (RFA1) and an anti-resonant frequency (AFA1), wherein the first AWR is inoperative when the first switch is opened and active when the first switch is closed;
- a second resonator module including a second acoustic wave resonator (AWR) arranged in series with a second switch, the second AWR having a resonant frequency (RFA2) and an anti-resonant frequency (AFA2), wherein the second AWR is inoperative when the second switch is opened and active when the second switch is closed;
- a first variable capacitor coupled across the first resonator module and the second resonator module, wherein the first variable capacitor is configured to modulate at least one of the anti-resonant frequencies (AFA1, AFA2);
- a tunable filter module coupled to the first resonator module and the second resonator module, the tunable filter module comprising:
- a third AWR configured to filter electrical signals and having a resonant frequency (RFA3) and an anti-resonant frequency (AFA3);
- a second variable capacitor coupled to the third AWR, the second variable capacitor configured to modulate the anti-resonant frequency (AFA3);
- wherein:
- a passband of the tunable resonator system is a function of a fixed resonant frequency of the first and the second resonator modules and is modulated by switching in or out the first AWR or the second AWR;
- a stopband of the tunable resonator system is modulated by varying the first variable capacitor.
