Abstract
The present invention provides a functionally dry warm mix asphalt binder composition modified with lubricating agents or additives that can be mixed with aggregate and compacted at temperatures substantially below asphalt binder compositions that do not contain the disclosed lubricating additives.

1-14. (canceled)
An uncompacted asphalt paving mixture comprising:
- a) a functionally dry, non-foamed asphalt binder composition containing an asphalt binder and a lubricating additive selected from the group consisting of a lubricating surfactant, a lubricating acid, or combination thereof;
- and
- b) aggregate mixed with the asphalt binder composition, wherein the functionally dry, non-foamed asphalt binder composition coats the aggregate,
- wherein the uncompacted asphalt paving mixture is adequately compactable at, and is at, a temperature at least 30° F. lower than a temperature needed for adequate compaction of an otherwise similar asphalt paving mixture that does not contain the lubricating additive.
A method of forming a paved surface, the method comprising:
- applying an uncompacted asphalt paving mixture to a surface, the asphalt paving mixture formed by coating an aggregate with a functionally dry, non-foamed, lubricated asphalt binder composition, the functionally dry, non-foamed, lubricated asphalt binder composition comprising an asphalt binder and a lubricating additive selected from the group consisting of a lubricating surfactant, a lubricating acid, or a combination thereof;
- and
- compacting the asphalt paving mixture to form the paved surface, wherein the asphalt paving mixture is adequately compacted at, and is at, a temperature at least 30° F. lower than a temperature needed for adequate compaction of an otherwise similar asphalt paving mixture that does not contain the lubricating additive.
A paved surface formed from an uncompacted asphalt paving mixture, the uncompacted asphalt paving mixture comprising an aggregate and a functionally dry, non-foamed asphalt binder composition,
- wherein the functionally dry, non-foamed asphalt binder composition comprises an asphalt binder and a lubricating additive selected from the group consisting of a lubricating surfactant, a lubricating acid, or combination thereof, and
- to form the paved surface, the uncompacted asphalt paving mixture is adequately compacted at, and is at, a temperature at least 30° F. lower than a temperature needed for adequate compaction of an otherwise similar asphalt paving mixture that does not contain the lubricating additive.
A method of forming an asphalt paving comprising the steps of:
- a) mixing:
- i) a functionally dry, essentially water-free non-foamed asphalt binder containing lubricating additive comprising lubricating surfactant, lubricating non-surfactant, lubricating acid, or combination thereof, with
- ii) aggregate to provide a heated paving material, wherein the binder coats the aggregate, and when the lubricating additive comprises a Fischer-Tropsch or Montan wax, the wax is 1.5 wt. % or less of the non-foamed asphalt binder weight;
- b) applying the heated paving material to a surface to be paved to provide an applied paving material;
- and
- c) compacting the applied paving material to at least 91% of theoretical density at a temperature 260° F. or lower to form a paved surface.
A method of making a paved surface comprising the steps of
- mixing an asphalt binder composition comprising an asphalt binder, an antistrip additive, and one or more lubricating additives selected from a lubricating surfactant, a lubricating non-surfactant, a lubricating acid, or a combination thereof, with aggregate at a temperature of 280° F. or lower, to provide a heated paving material;
- applying the heated paving material to a surface to be paved to provide an applied paving material, and
- compacting the applied paving material at a temperature 260° F. or lower to form a paved surface.
A method of making a warm mix paving composition comprising:
- adding to an asphalt binder an antistrip additive and one or more lubricating additives selected from a lubricating surfactant, a lubricating non-surfactant, a lubricating acid or combination thereof to form an asphalt binder composition;
- and
- combining the asphalt binder composition with aggregate at a temperature of 260° F. or lower to coat the aggregate and produce a warm mix paving composition, the warm mix paving composition at a warm mix temperature is at least about 30-50° F. lower than a substantially similar asphalt/aggregate mixture that does not contain the lubricating additive and antistrip additive.
