Abstract
A lightweight impeller is provided for use in a pressurised gas source for a CPAP or other breathing assistance apparatus. The impeller can be shroudless or otherwise lightweight.
Claims17
1-14. (canceled)
A breathing assistance apparatus comprising:
- a pressurised gases source comprising a housing, a gases inlet, and a gases outlet that is configured to emit pressurised gases to an outlet of the breathing assistance apparatus;
- a motor comprising:
- a rotor comprising an opening and an axially protruding portion;
- a rotatable shaft extending through the opening of the rotor;
- and
- the axially protruding portion coupled to a bearing, the bearing coupled to a resilient bearing mount, the bearing being positioned between the axially protruding portion and the resilient bearing mount, the resilient bearing mount being configured to provide a preload on the bearing, the preload being provided by the axially protruding portion pressing against the bearing, the resilient bearing mount providing a bias against the bearing;
- and
- a lightweight impeller mounted to the rotatable shaft.

A breathing assistance apparatus comprising:
- a motor comprising:
- a rotor comprising an opening and an axially protruding portion;
- a rotatable shaft positioned inside of a stator, the rotatable shaft extending through the opening of the rotor;
- and
- the rotor contacting the rotatable shaft, the axially protruding portion contacting a bearing, the bearing contacting a resilient bearing mount, the bearing being positioned between the axially protruding portion and the resilient bearing mount whereby a preload is provided to the bearing, the bearing supporting the rotatable shaft within the stator;
- and
- a lightweight impeller coupled to the rotatable shaft.

A breathing assistance apparatus comprising:
- a motor comprising:
- a rotor comprising an opening, a first axially protruding portion, and a second axially protruding portion,
- a rotatable shaft extending through a stator, the rotatable shaft also extending through the opening of a rotor,
- the rotor contacting the rotatable shaft, the first axially protruding portion and the second axially protruding portion being on opposed axial ends of the rotor;
- a first bearing supporting the rotatable shaft within the stator, the first bearing contacting the first axially protruding portion, the first bearing supported by a first resilient bearing mount;
- a second bearing supporting the rotatable shaft within the stator, the second bearing contacting the second axially protruding portion, the second bearing being supported by a second resilient bearing mount;
- and
- the first resilient bearing mount and the second resilient bearing mount engaging the first bearing and the second bearing in opposing directions whereby the first resilient bearing mount applying a first preload to the first bearing when the first resilient bearing mount acts on the stator and the first bearing, the second resilient bearing mount applying a second preload to the second bearing when the second resilient bearing mount acts on the stator and the second bearing, the first preload and the second preload acting upon the rotatable shaft whereby rotational imbalances in the motor are reduced;
- and
- a lightweight impeller coupled to the rotatable shaft.
