Optical Systems including Light-Guide Optical Elements with Two-Dimensional Expansion

An optical system for directing image light from a projector to an eye-motion box for viewing by an eye of a user, the optical system comprising:

• (a) a lightguide configuration having a pair of mutually parallel major surfaces for supporting propagation of image light by internal reflection at said major surfaces;
• and
• (b) a coupling-in arrangement configured to couple in image light from the projector into said lightguide configuration so as to propagate in a first in-plane direction within said lightguide configuration by internal reflection at said major external surfaces,
• said lightguide configuration comprising:
• (i) a first lightguide component formed from a sequence of transparent plates sequentially bonded together at a first set of planar, mutually-parallel, interfaces, each interface being provided with a partially-reflecting coating, said interfaces being oriented so as to progressively deflect the image light propagating within said lightguide configuration in the first in-plane direction so as to propagate in a second in-plane direction within said lightguide configuration by internal reflection at said major external surfaces,
• (ii) a second lightguide component having a coupling-out configuration implemented as a second set of planar, mutually-parallel interfaces within said second lightguide component, each interface of said second set of interfaces being provided with a partially-reflecting coating, said second set of interfaces being oriented obliquely to said major surfaces so as to progressively couple out the image light propagating within said lightguide configuration in the second in-plane direction towards the eye of the user, and
• (iii) a clear lightguide component at least partially interposed between said first lightguide component and said second lightguide component,
• wherein said first lightguide component, said second lightguide component and said clear lightguide component are combined into said lightguide configuration as parts of a continuous planar lightguide bounded by said pair of mutually parallel major surfaces so that the image light propagating from the coupling-in in the first in-plane direction is progressively redirected by the partially-reflecting coatings of said interfaces so as to propagate in the second direction towards the second lightguide component, at least part of the redirected image light passing through said clear lightguide component,
• and wherein a boundary of said first lightguide component includes a first straight edge and wherein lines of intersection of planes containing said second set of interfaces with said major surfaces extend in a second direction, said clear lightguide component being bounded at least in part by a third straight edge which is optically bonded to said first straight edge and by a fourth straight edge which is parallel to said second direction, said third and fourth straight edges having an acute angle therebetween.
