## Abstract

A fault detector for a control system that includes a controller, a solenoid driver, a current sensor and a solenoid. The solenoid driver provides a current to the solenoid in response to a control signal provided by the controller to the solenoid driver and the current sensor measures the current provided by the solenoid driver to the solenoid to determine a current measurement. At any moment, the control signal corresponds to one of a demanded zero current, a demanded first current magnitude or a demanded second current magnitude. The fault detector detects a fault based upon a comparison of the current measurement to an expected current range, wherein the expected current range is dependent upon which of the demanded zero current, demanded first current magnitude or the demanded second current magnitude the control system corresponds to at that moment.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A fault detector for a control system that includes a controller, a solenoid driver, a current sensor and a solenoid, wherein:
in response to a control signal provided by the controller to the solenoid driver, the solenoid driver provides a current to the solenoid;
the current sensor measures the current provided by the solenoid driver to the solenoid to determine a current measurement;
wherein at any moment, the control signal corresponds to one of a demanded zero current, a demanded first current magnitude or a demanded second current magnitude; and
the fault detector detects a fault based upon a comparison of the current measurement to an expected current range, wherein the expected current range is dependent upon which of the demanded zero current, demanded first current magnitude or the demanded second current magnitude the control system corresponds to at that moment.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein:
when the control signal corresponds to the demanded first current magnitude, the expected current range has a lower bound that corresponds to a minimum current that is sufficient to actuate an armature of the solenoid such that the armature translates from a first state to a second state, and an upper bound that is insufficient to damage the solenoid or solenoid driver;
when the control signal corresponds to the second current magnitude, the expected current range has a lower bound that corresponds to a minimum current that is sufficient to hold the armature of the solenoid in the second state, and an upper bound that is insufficient to damage the solenoid or solenoid driver; and
when the control signal corresponds to the demanded zero current, the expected current range has a lower bound of zero and an upper bound that is insufficient to actuate the armature of the solenoid such that the armature translates from the first state to the second state.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The fault detector of claim 2, wherein:
the lower bound of the expected current range when the control signal corresponds to the demanded first current magnitude is equal to the upper bound of the expected current range when the control signal corresponds to the demanded second current magnitude; and/or,
the lower bound of the expected current range when the control signal corresponds to the demanded second current magnitude is equal to the upper bound of the expected current range when the control signal corresponds to the demanded zero current.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The fault detector of claim 2, wherein a fault is detected if the current measurement is outside the expected current range when the control signal corresponds to at least one of the demanded zero current, the demanded first current magnitude or the demanded second current magnitude.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein:
a minimum current to hold the armature open is approximately 2.5 amps; and/or,
a minimum current to actuate the armature of the solenoid is 10 amps; and/or,
an upper bound current that is insufficient to damage the solenoid or the solenoid driver is 15 amps.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The fault detector of claim 2, wherein:
when the armature of the solenoid is in the first state a valve connected to the armature is in a first state; and,
when the armature of the solenoid is in the second state, the valve connected to the armature is in a second state.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The fault detector of claim 6, wherein the valve is closed when in its first state, and the valve is open when in its second state.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein the solenoid driver comprises:
a switch;
a first voltage sensor measuring a voltage across the switch; and/or
a second voltage sensor measuring an input voltage to the solenoid.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The fault detector of claim 8, wherein the control signal is not provided by the controller to the solenoid driver if an open circuit comprising the solenoid is detected, the open circuit being detected based upon the input voltage to the solenoid measured by the second voltage sensor.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein the fault detector categorises a fault type corresponding to an identification of a failed control system component, based upon the measured current and the measured input voltage to the solenoid.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The fault detector of claim 10, wherein the fault type is recorded within a computer memory, the computer memory being accessible by a user.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein in response to detection of the fault by the fault detector, the fault detector provides an output to cause a power supply to the solenoid driver to be electrically isolated from the solenoid driver.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The fault detector of claim 12, wherein electrically isolating the power supply to the solenoid driver is performed by a component of the control system that is independent of the controller.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The fault detector of claim 1, wherein the solenoid is a safety critical solenoid of a fluid biasing valve.
