Abstract
A microfluidic chip having a micro channel for processing a sample is provided. The micro channel may focus the sample by using focusing fluid and a core stream forming geometry. The core stream forming geometry may include a lateral fluid focusing component and one or more vertical fluid focusing components. A microfluidic chip may include a plurality micro channels operating in parallel on a microfluidic chip.
Claims12
A method for producing a focused sample in a microfluidic flow channel, the method comprising:
- receiving a sample stream at an inlet of the microfluidic flow channel formed in a substantially planar substrate having upper and lower surfaces;
- flowing the sample stream through a lateral fluid focusing component of a fluid focusing region of a core stream forming geometry to focus the stream laterally, the sample stream and a focusing fluid entering the fluid focusing region in a same plane relative to the microfluidic flow channel which lies in a first plane;
- flowing the sample stream through a first vertical fluid focusing component downstream of the lateral fluid focusing feature to provide a first vertical influence to focus the sample stream;
- flowing the sample stream through a second vertical fluid focusing component downstream of the first vertical fluid focusing component to provide a second vertical influence to focus the sample stream;
- and
- flowing the focused sample stream through the microfluidic flow channel downstream of the first and second vertical fluid focusing components, wherein the microfluidic flow channel downstream of the first and second vertical fluid focusing components lies in a second plane.
