## Abstract

An energy delivery probe and method of using the energy delivery probe to treat a patient is provided herein. The energy delivery probe has at least one probe body having a longitudinal axis and at least a first trocar and a second trocar. Each trocar comprises at least two electrodes that are electrically insulated from each other, and each electrode is independently selectively activatable. An insulative sleeve is positioned in a coaxially surrounding relationship to each of the first trocar and the second trocar. The probe also has a switching means for independently activating at least one electrode. The method involves independently and selectively activating the first and second electrodes to form an ablation zone, then repeating the ablation by delivering energy to a second set of electrodes, producing one or more overlapping ablation zone, and eliminating the need to reposition the ablation probes.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

The method of claim 14, wherein the delivering of electrical energy from the first electrode to the second electrode includes delivering a first set of pulses from the first electrode to the second electrode, wherein the first set of pulses is less than a total number of desired pulses to be delivered from the first electrode to the second electrode.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein the delivering of electrical energy from the second electrode to the first electrode includes delivering a second set of pulses from the second electrode to the first electrode, and wherein the second set of pulses is less than a total number of desired pulses to be delivered from the second electrode to the first electrode.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method of claim 19, wherein the electrical energy source is configured to repeat switching from delivering electrical energy from the first electrode to the second electrode and from the second electrode to the first electrode until the total number of desired pulses to be delivered from the first electrode to the second electrode and from the second electrode to the first electrode is delivered.

### Claim 21 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the first energy delivery probe includes an insulator coaxially surrounding at least a section of the first energy delivery probe.

### Claim 22 (depends on 14)

### Claim 23 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the second electrode is positioned on a second energy delivery probe, and wherein the placing of the second electrode includes inserting the second energy delivery probe into or near the BPH.

### Claim 24

A method of treating prostate tissue in a patient, the method comprising:
activating a generator operatively coupled to a first electrode and a second electrode to apply a first plurality of pulses between the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein the first electrode is positioned within or near the prostate tissue and the second electrode is positioned in a spaced relation relative to the first electrode, and wherein each electrode is configured to be independently selectively activatable; and
activating the generator to apply a second plurality of pulses from the second electrode to the first electrode,
wherein the first plurality of pulses create a first ablation zone within the prostate tissue and the second plurality of pluses create a second ablation zone within the prostate tissue, wherein the first ablation zone and the second ablation zone overlap.

### Claim 25 (depends on 24)

The method of claim 24, wherein a region including the overlap of the first ablation zone and the second ablation zone includes at least part of the prostate tissue.
