Abstract
The present invention provides water-based energy curable compositions that are useful as primers on metallized substrates. The compositions comprise energy-curable monomers and oligomers, inert polyurethane dispersions, and phosphoric acid. The compositions exhibit improved adhesion to metallized substrates, compared to compositions that do not contain phosphoric acid. In addition, the compositions provide improved adhesion to overprinted energy-curable inks when the compositions of the invention are used as primers on metallized substrates.
Claims8
A water-based energy-curable primer composition comprising:
- (a) 35 wt % to 80 wt % one or more water-compatible ethylenically unsaturated monomers, ethylenically unsaturated oligomers, or a combination thereof, based on the total weight of the composition;
- (b) 3 wt % to 12 wt % one or more water-based polyurethane dispersions, based on the total weight of the composition;
- (c) 2 wt % to 10 wt % one or more photoinitiators, based on the total weight of the composition;
- and
- (d) phosphoric acid.
