Abstract
Exemplary endotracheal tubes are provided. The endotracheal tube includes a tubular member extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and defining an outer surface and an inner surface of the tubular member. The endotracheal tube includes a first cuff positioned about a portion of the outer surface of the tubular member, and the first cuff defining an inner surface and an outer surface of the first cuff. The endotracheal tube includes a sensor disposed on or adjacent to the outer surface of the first cuff. The endotracheal tube includes a second cuff positioned over the sensor at and least partially over the first cuff. The sensor, which is thereby disposed between the first and second cuffs, allows for accurate measurement of vital signs and/or physiological parameters of the patient.
Claims29
An endotracheal tube, comprising:
- a tubular member extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and defining an outer surface and an inner surface of the tubular member;
- a first cuff positioned about a portion of the outer surface of the tubular member, the first cuff defining an inner surface and an outer surface of the first cuff;
- a sensor disposed on or adjacent to the outer surface of the first cuff;
- and
- a second cuff positioned over the sensor and at least partially over the first cuff, wherein the sensor is disposed between the first and second cuffs.
A method of measuring one or more vital signs or physiological parameters of a patient, the method comprising:
- inserting a distal end of an endotracheal tube into a trachea of a patient, the endotracheal tube including (i) a tubular member extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and defining an outer surface and an inner surface of the tubular member, (ii) a first cuff positioned about a portion of the outer surface of the tubular member, the first cuff defining an inner surface and an outer surface of the first cuff, (iii) a sensor disposed on or adjacent to the outer surface of the first cuff, and (iv) a second cuff positioned over the sensor and at least partially over the first cuff, wherein the sensor is disposed between the first and second cuffs;
- expanding the first cuff of the endotracheal tube to move the sensor radially outward away from the tubular member and against a wall of the trachea;
- and
- measuring one or more vital signs or physiological parameters of the patient with the sensor.
A tracheostomy tube, comprising:
- a tubular member extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and defining an outer surface and an inner surface of the tubular member;
- a first cuff positioned about a portion of the outer surface of the tubular member, the first cuff defining an inner surface and an outer surface of the first cuff;
- a sensor disposed on or adjacent to the outer surface of the first cuff;
- and
- a second cuff positioned over the sensor and at least partially over the first cuff, wherein the sensor is disposed between the first and second cuffs.
