A continuous organic carbonisation system (OCS) and methods therefor include a pressurisable reactor vessel that is configured for receiving organic matter for carbonisation at an inlet, via a continuous feed valve that is a rotary airlock valve or a trickle valve. A similar feed valve feeds carbonised matter out of the reactor vessel. The reactor vessel defines an unobstructed hollow heating portion that is preferably vertically oriented. The OCS further includes a heating circuit for heating a pressurised dioxygen deficient working gas, which is used as a heat transfer fluid. The OCS further includes a cooling portion that may be a lower length of the reactor vessel, or may be provided as a separate vessel. The cooling portion may be cooled by cooling gas circulating in a cooling circuit.
