Abstract
A harmful substance removal system and method include a direct contact liquid concentrator having a gas inlet, a gas outlet, a mixing chamber disposed between the gas inlet and the gas outlet, and a liquid inlet for importing liquid into the mixing chamber. Gas and liquid mixing are mixed in the mixing chamber and a portion of the liquid is vaporized. A demister is disposed downstream of the mixing chamber. The demister includes at least one stage of mist elimination having a first filter that removes liquid droplets less than 9 microns in size. A fan is coupled to the demister to assist gas flow through the mixing chamber.
Claims22
A harmful substance removal system, comprising:
- a direct contact liquid concentrator including a gas inlet, a gas outlet, a mixing chamber disposed between the gas inlet and the gas outlet, and a liquid inlet for importing liquid into the mixing chamber, gas and liquid mixing in the mixing chamber to vaporize a portion of the liquid to from a gas stream with liquid droplets therein;
- a demister disposed downstream of the mixing chamber, the demister including at least one stage of mist elimination comprising a first filter capable of capturing liquid droplets of 9 microns and larger in size from the gas stream;
- and
- a fan coupled to the demister to assist gas flow through the mixing chamber.
A method of capturing per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that is disposed a liquid, the method comprising:
- providing a source of heated gas;
- moving the heated gas through a direct contact liquid concentrator, the direct contact liquid concentrator comprising:
- a gas inlet;
- a gas outlet;
- a liquid inlet;
- and
- a mixing chamber connecting the gas inlet and the gas outlet,
- injecting a liquid including PFAS into the mixing chamber through the liquid inlet;
- mixing the gas and the liquid in the mixing chamber, so that energy in the gas at least partially evaporates the liquid to produce a gas stream with entrained liquid droplets;
- and
- removing entrained liquid droplets from the gas stream that are less than 10 microns in size to capture the PFAS.
