Abstract
A redundantly printed security-enhanced document, printing method, and system for better ensuring that the meaning of the information imparted by variable indicia printed by redundant printing indicia on a document protected by a removable Scratch-Off Coating (SOC). By printing the variable indicia with multiple colors, redundancy and integrity of the intended indicia is achieved relative to the perception of human eye photoreceptor cones. The redundantly printed document, methods, and systems enhance the overall appearance of the redundantly printed document, and reduce possible consequences resulting from misprinted variable indicia.

A method of printing a security-enhanced document comprising a substrate having a background and process color variable indicia representing variable information printed on the substrate, the process color variable indicia comprising a first quantity of different component colors, the first quantity being at least two, the method comprising:
- selecting the first quantity of different component colors of the process color variable indica by:
- determining an illuminating light color temperature;
- for a second quantity of different component colors, the second quantity being greater than the first quantity, determining, using the illuminating light color temperature, an average grayscale equivalent level of each said component color of the second quantity of different component colors for each of the red, green, and blue channels of an additive color model;
- for the background, determining, using the illuminating light color temperature, an average grayscale equivalent level for each of the red, green, and blue channels of the additive color model;
- selecting the first quantity of different component colors to be used for the process color variable indicia from the second quantity of different component colors such that each selected component color exhibits a grayscale equivalent level greater than or equal to a predetermined minimum Signal-to-Noise (S/N) threshold relative to the average grayscale equivalent level of the background in at least one of the red, green, or blue channels of the additive color model, and such that a failure of printing of any one of the first quantity of component colors for the process color variable indicia does not alter the meaning of the variable information represented by another one of the first quantity of component colors;
- and
- printing the security-enhanced document with the selected first quantity of different component colors.
A method for printing security-enhanced documents with a substrate, background, and process color variable indicia representing variable information printed on the substrate, the process color variable indicia comprising a first quantity of different component colors, the first quantity being at least two, the method comprising:
- generating an illuminating light at a specified color temperature;
- determining for a second quantity of the different component colors, the second quantity being greater than the first quantity, using the illuminating light at a specified color temperature with each of the second quantity of component colors scanned in a digitally suitable format, an average grayscale equivalent level of each said component color for each of the red, green, and blue channels of an additive color model;
- determining for the background, using the illuminating light at a specified color temperature with the background scanned in a digitally suitable format, an average grayscale equivalent level for each of the red, green, and blue channels of an additive color model;
- selecting the first quantity of different component colors from the second quantity of different component colors to be used as a portion of the process color variable indicia, each said selected component color exhibiting a grayscale equivalent level greater than or equal to a predetermined minimum Signal-to-Noise (S/N) threshold relative to the average grayscale equivalent level of the background in at least one of the red, green, or blue channels of the additive color model, such that a failure of printing of any one of the first quantity of different component colors for the process color variable indicia does not alter the meaning of the variable information represented by the other of the first quantity of component colors;
- and
- printing the security-enhanced document with an imager using the selected first quantity of component colors.
