Virtual private network connection status monitoring

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, by a computing device and based on a request to connect to a virtual private network (VPN), a signal that the computing device has been connected to the VPN;
• receiving, by the computing device, handshake data from a server of the VPN;
• determining, by the computing device, that a threshold time period has passed since a latest-in-time handshake notification of the handshake data, wherein the threshold time period is determined according to a schedule selected based on a connection status between the computing device and the VPN;
• and
• providing, by the computing device and based on determining that the threshold time period has passed since the latest-in-time handshake notification of the handshake data, an indicator that the computing device is no longer connected to the VPN.

A system comprising:

• a memory subsystem storing instructions;
• and
• processing circuitry that executes the instructions to:
• receive, by a computing device and based on a request to connect to a virtual private network (VPN), a signal that the computing device has been connected to the VPN;
• receive, by the computing device, handshake data from a server of the VPN;
• determine, by the computing device, that a threshold time period has passed since a latest-in-time handshake notification of the handshake data, wherein the threshold time period is determined according to a schedule selected based on a connection status between the computing device and the VPN;
• and
• provide, by the computing device and based on determining that the threshold time period has passed since the latest-in-time handshake notification of the handshake data, an indicator that the computing device is no longer connected to the VPN.
