Abstract
A system and method for assembling framing assemblies for use as ceiling or floor structures of modular building units using automation are disclosed. The framing assemblies include trusses that are attached at the lateral edges thereof by a joist including at least one layer of dimensional lumber to form a substantially rigid framework. Cover panels are positioned over and attached to an inner surface of the framing assembly.

A method of fastening a plurality of wall covering panels to a framing assembly for a floor or a ceiling in a modular construction unit, the method comprising:
- lowering a bit assembly of a fastening device having a fastener thereon until the fastener contacts a wall covering panel of the plurality of wall covering panels;
- rotating the bit assembly to rotate the fastener and drive the fastener into the wall covering panel;
- determining whether a fastener depth of the fastener within the wall covering panel is within a depth zone;
- determining whether a torque of the bit assembly is within a torque window when the fastener is at the depth zone;
- and
- stopping rotation of the bit assembly and raising the bit assembly when the fastener is at the depth zone and the torque of the bit assembly is within the torque window.
A fastening system for fastening a plurality of wall covering panels to a framing assembly for a floor or a ceiling in a modular construction unit, the fastening system comprising:
- a frame;
- a fastening device movably coupled to the frame, the fastening device including a bit assembly, the bit assembly having a fastener applied thereon;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- lower the bit assembly until the fastener contacts a wall covering panel of the plurality of wall covering panels;
- rotate the bit assembly to rotate the fastener and drive the fastener into the wall covering panel;
- determine whether a fastener depth of the fastener within the wall covering panel is within a depth zone;
- determine whether a torque of the bit assembly is within a torque window when the fastener is at the depth zone;
- and
- stop rotation of the bit assembly and raise the bit assembly when the fastener is at the depth zone and the torque of the bit assembly is within the torque window.
