## Abstract

An eyepiece for an augmented reality display system. The eyepiece can include a waveguide substrate. The waveguide substrate can include an input coupler grating (ICG), an orthogonal pupil expander (OPE) grating, a spreader grating, and an exit pupil expander (EPE) grating. The ICG can couple at least one input light beam into at least a first guided light beam that propagates inside the waveguide substrate. The OPE grating can divide the first guided light beam into a plurality of parallel, spaced-apart light beams. The spreader grating can receive the light beams from the OPE grating and spread their distribution. The spreader grating can include diffractive features oriented at approximately 90° to diffractive features of the OPE grating. The EPE grating can re-direct the light beams from the first OPE grating and the first spreader grating such that they exit the waveguide substrate.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-18. (canceled)

### Claim 19

An eyepiece comprising:
a waveguide substrate that is at least partially transparent;
an input coupler grating formed on or in the waveguide substrate between a first orthogonal pupil expander (OPE) region formed on or in the waveguide substrate and a second OPE region formed on or in the waveguide substrate, wherein the input coupler grating is configured to divide and redirect an input light beam incident on the input coupler grating into the first OPE region and the second OPE region, and wherein the first and second OPE regions are configured to divide the input light beam from the input coupler grating into a plurality of parallel light beams; and
an exit pupil expander (EPE) region formed on or in the waveguide substrate, wherein the EPE region comprises diffractive optical features configured to allow the EPE region to diffract the plurality of parallel light beams and exit the waveguide substrate towards an eye of a user of the eyepiece.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the EPE region defines an EPE grating comprising a plurality of curved grating lines, wherein a curvature of the curved grating lines determines an optical power of the EPB grating.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The eyepiece of claim 20, wherein the waveguide substrate is configured to output a plurality of output beams such that each of the plurality of output beams correspond to a different depth plane, the different depth planes being determined by the optical power of the EPE grating.

### Claim 22 (depends on 20)

The eyepiece of claim 20, wherein an exit angle for each of a plurality of parallel light beams is correlated to a corresponding angle of entrance of the input light beam incident on the input coupler grating.

### Claim 23 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the waveguide substrate comprises a first waveguide substrate, a second waveguide substrate, and a third waveguide substrate, and wherein each of the first waveguide substrate, the second waveguide substrate, and the third waveguide substrate are at least partially transparent.

### Claim 24 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the waveguide substrate comprises glass, plastic, polycarbonate, or sapphire.

### Claim 25 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the waveguide substrate has an index of refraction above 1.

### Claim 26 (depends on 24)

The eyepiece of claim 24, wherein the index of refraction is between 1.5 and 2.

### Claim 27 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the waveguide substrate is less than 325 microns thick.

### Claim 28 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the input coupler grating defines diffractive optical features comprising a plurality of features arranged in a hexagonal lattice to divide and redirect the input light beam toward the first OPE region.

### Claim 29 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the first and second OPE regions are separated by approximately 180° and the EPE region is located at about 90° with respect to an axis of the first and second OPE regions.

### Claim 30 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein an orientation of the first and second OPE regions is slanted with respect to the input light beam.

### Claim 31 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the input coupler grating comprises a plurality of grating lines forming at least one diffraction grating.

### Claim 32 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, wherein the input coupler grating comprises a crossed diffraction grating.

### Claim 33 (depends on 19)

The eyepiece of claim 19, further comprising a projector configured to direct light toward the input coupler grating.

### Claim 34 (depends on 19)

A virtual reality system comprising the eyepiece of claim 19.
