## Abstract

An optical system comprises a turning film and a lenticular diffuser. The lenticular diffuser comprises a structured surface comprising a plurality of microstructures comprises a plurality of lenticular prisms separated by substantially flat land areas, the lenticular prisms having a rounded tip and two sides comprising a linear base section and a linear tip section connected by a polynomial blend section.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A lenticular diffuser, comprising:
a substantially smooth surface, wherein the substantially smooth surface defines a display axis extending perpendicular to the substantially smooth surface; and
a structured surface comprising a plurality of microstructures defining a plurality of substantially parallel grooves extending along a plane substantially perpendicular the display axis,
wherein the structured surface comprises a plurality of microstructures each comprising a lenticular prism having linear end sections connected by a blend section separated by a substantially flat land area, wherein the blend section shape is a segment of an ellipse or 2nd, 4th or 6th order polynomial, and wherein the linear end sections comprise at least about 5% of the lenticular prism;
wherein a cross section of each lenticular prism extends along a plane substantially parallel to the display axis in a direction from the substantially smooth surface to a vertex, and
wherein the lenticular diffuser refracts light that is substantially collimated in a first plane toward a second plane substantially perpendicular to the first plane.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 1, further comprising a first material having a first refractive index and a second material having a second refractive index, wherein the first material forms the plurality of lenticular prisms and the second material is adjacent the first material and wherein the first refractive index is greater than the second refractive index.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 2, wherein the difference between the first refractive index and the second refractive index is at least about 0.15.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 3, wherein the difference between the first refractive index and the second refractive index is about 0.2 to about 0.25.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 1, wherein the lenticular prisms have linear section base angles of about 60 degrees to about 90 degrees.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 5, wherein the lenticular prisms have linear section base angles of about 70 degrees to about 85 degrees.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 6, wherein the lenticular prisms have linear section base angles of about 75 degrees to about 85 degrees.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 1, wherein the lenticular prisms have an aspect ratio of about 0.75 to about 1.5.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 1, wherein the structured surface has a fill fraction of about 0.8 to about 1.0.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 9, wherein the structured surface has a fill fraction of about 0.85 to about 0.95.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 1, wherein the blend section shape is a segment of an ellipse.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 11, wherein the blend section shape is a segment of an ellipse having an ellipticity of about 1.5 to about 4.0.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The lenticular diffuser of claim 12, wherein the blend section shape is a segment of an ellipse having an ellipticity of about 1.8 to about 3.5.
