## Abstract

A diffuser is disclosed. A system comprising a light source and a diffuser is disclosed. The light source is aligned with a microlens of the diffuser in a static configuration. A method of reducing speckle with the system is also disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A diffuser comprising:
a random distribution of microlenses, wherein each microlens includes a scattering unit and a boundary shape,
wherein the random distribution of microlenses includes a randomized distribution of the boundary shapes; and
wherein each scattering unit is randomly distributed across a surface of the diffuser at different scales.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The diffuser of claim 1, wherein the scattering unit has a surface profile characterized by slopes that are configured to spread a light beam from an associated light source away from the microlens.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The diffuser of claim 1, wherein the boundary shapes of the microlenses are defined by polygonal curves.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The diffuser of claim 1, wherein the scattering unit is a sag profile.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The diffuser of claim 1, wherein the random distribution of microlenses include a randomized distribution of sag profiles.

### Claim 6

A system comprising:
a plurality of light sources; and
a diffuser comprising a distribution of microlenses;
wherein each light source of the plurality of light sources is aligned with a single microlens of the diffuser, and
wherein the system is in a static configuration.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein each light source, of the plurality of light sources, is individually coherent.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein the plurality of light sources are mutually incoherent.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the microlenses are present on a first surface of the diffuser oriented towards the light source.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the microlenses are present on a second surface of the diffuser oriented away from light source.

### Claim 11 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the scattering unit has a surface profile characterized by slopes that are configured to spread a light beam from an associated light source away from the microlens.

### Claim 12 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the boundary shapes of the microlenses are defined by polygonal curves.

### Claim 13 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the scattering unit is a sag profile.

### Claim 14 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the random distribution of microlenses include a randomized distribution of sag profiles.

### Claim 15

A method of using a system, comprising:
emitting light from a plurality of light sources, wherein each light source of the plurality of light sources is aligned with a single corresponding microlens of a plurality of microlenses of a diffuser; and
receiving the emitted light from a single light source of the plurality of light sources in the corresponding microlens of the plurality of microlenses of the diffuser;
wherein the system is in a static configuration.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein each light source, of the plurality of light sources, is individually coherent.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein the plurality of light sources are mutually incoherent.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The method of claim 17, wherein the diffuser comprises a random distribution of microlenses, wherein each microlens includes a scattering unit and has a boundary shape.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein each scattering unit is randomly distributed across a surface of the diffuser at different scales.
