Abstract
Described are compositions and methods for inhibiting and retarding polymerization of a monomer composition, which use a naphthoquinone and an oxygenated aminophenol. When present in a monomer-containing composition, the combination of the naphthoquinone and oxygenated aminophenol provides an unexpected beneficial antipolymerant effect inhibiting unwanted formation of fouling polymer. The antipolymerant combination can be added to a hydrocarbon composition, such as a petroleum, that can include a polymerizable components, such as styrene, where the hydrocarbon composition is purified or processed, such as in the case of distillation.
Claims27
A method to impede formation of polymer in a monomer-containing composition, the method comprising
- adding to a composition comprising a polymerizable monomer or a compound capable of forming a polymerizable monomer components comprising:
- a benzoquinone or naphthoquinone compound, and
- an oxygenated aminophenol compound,
- the oxygenated aminophenol compound being a compound of Formula I:
- wherein at least one of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 is or are —OH, and wherein any one or more of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 that is not —OH is or are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkyl aryl and aryl alkyl, or any two adjacent groups of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 that are not —OH form one or more ring structures;
- wherein R6 and R7 are, independently, carbon-containing groups, and at least one of R6 and R7 comprises one or more oxygen atom(s) separated from the N atom by one or more carbon atoms;
- wherein the benzoquinone or naphthoquinone compound, and the oxygenated aminophenol compound, impede formation of polymer in the composition.

- the oxygenated aminophenol compound being a compound of Formula I:
- wherein at least one of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 is or are —OH, and wherein any one or more of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 that is not —OH is or are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkyl aryl and aryl alkyl, or any two adjacent groups of —R1, —R2, —R3, —R4, and —R5 that are not —OH form one or more ring structures;
- wherein R6 and R7 are, independently, carbon-containing groups, and at least one of R6 and R7 comprises one or more oxygen atom(s) separated from the N atom by one or more carbon atoms.
