Abstract
A disinfectant transmissive material incorporated into a case for a mobile device or a supporting surface of a disinfecting charger to enable disinfection of hard-to-reach areas. The case can be self-disinfecting. The disinfecting charger can have monitoring and safety systems that detect proximity and provide user feedback on safety, disinfection, and charge status along with automatic interlocks to protect the user from overexposure to disinfectant.

A portable device case for a portable electronic device, wherein the case comprises:
- a UV transmissive layer configured to transmit UV energy therethrough;
- wherein the UV transmissive layer includes a plurality of UV transmissive apertures configured to align with a plurality of corresponding physical features of a portable electronic device installed within the portable device case;
- wherein the portable device case is configured to at least partially cover a portable electronic device installed within the portable device case;
- and
- wherein the UV transmissive layer is configured to direct UV energy incident on the UV transmissive layer toward the plurality of UV transmissive apertures to disinfect the corresponding physical features of a portable electronic device installed within the portable device case.

A self-disinfecting portable device case for a portable device, comprising:
- a portable device housing adapted to cover at least a portion of a portable device, the portable device housing being UV transmissive and including an external touch surface and a plurality of housing apertures configured to facilitate a plurality of corresponding physical features of a portable device installed within the self-disinfecting portable device case;
- a UV source disposed adjacent to the portable device housing, wherein the UV source is configured to emit UV energy into the UV transmissive portable device housing and direct the UV energy toward the plurality of housing apertures configured to facilitate the plurality of corresponding physical features;
- and
- a UV disinfection control circuit disposed within the self-disinfecting portable device case and configured to control the UV source.
