Abstract
A front end of a raster image processing (RIP) system decides a starting storage location and a storage hierarchy. The hierarchy dictates where the rendered pages of a job will be stored. At least one page of a first set of pages of a job are stored at a memory for the RIP system. At least one page of a second set of pages of the job are stored in a storage drive when the memory is not available. The type of job also dictates that the rendered pages of the job are stored in the storage drive. Complex pages also are stored in the storage drive while simple pages are discarded. The processing operations are managed so that the print engine is running efficiently.
Claims20
A method for managing printing operations, the method comprising:
- receiving a print job having a plurality of pages to be printed at a printing device;
- creating a hierarchy of storage drives where the plurality of pages is to be stored;
- rendering the plurality of pages using a raster image processing (RIP) system for the printing device;
- determining that printing the print job is to be deferred to a subsequent time period depending on a job type of the print job;
- and
- storing the rendered plurality of pages in a first storage drive of the hierarchy of storage drives accessible by the RIP system according to the job type, wherein the first storage drive has a higher capacity storage than a memory accessible by the RIP system.
A method for managing printing operations, the method comprising:
- receiving a print job having a plurality of copies to be printed at a printing device;
- creating a hierarchy of storage drives where the plurality of pages is to be stored;
- rendering a plurality of pages of the print job using a raster image processing (RIP) system for the printing device;
- storing the rendered plurality of pages in a first storage drive accessible by the RIP system, wherein the first storage drive has a higher capacity storage than a memory accessible by the RIP system;
- communicating that the rendered plurality of pages is stored in the first storage drive;
- retrieving the rendered plurality of pages from the first storage drive by an engine manager of the RIP system;
- printing a copy of the plurality of copies of the print job using the rendered plurality of pages;
- determining a final copy of the plurality of copies of the print job is printed;
- and
- deleting the rendered plurality of pages from the first storage drive.
A method for managing printing operations, the method comprising:
- rendering a print job having a plurality of pages at a raster image processing (RIP) system for a printing device;
- receiving an instruction to suspend rendering of the print job, wherein at least one first page of the plurality of pages has been rendered by the RIP system and stored in a memory accessible by the printing device;
- storing the at least one first page in a first storage drive accessible by the printing device;
- and
- deleting the at least one first page from the memory.
