Abstract
Synthesis of polyalphaolefins by oligomerization of one or more branched C10 monoolefins with a solid acid catalyst to form an oligomer product, followed by hydrogenation of a C20+ olefin portion of the oligomer product to form the polyalphaolefins. The solid acid catalyst is selective to C20 olefin dimers.
Claims20
A process comprising:
- contacting a composition comprising one or more branched C10 monoolefins with a solid acid catalyst to produce an oligomer product comprising unreacted C10 monoolefins and C20 olefin dimers, wherein the one or more branched C10 monoolefins comprise 2-butyl-1-hexene, 3-propyl-1-heptene, 4-ethyl-1-octene, and 5-methyl-1-nonene;
- separating the oligomer product into an unreacted C10 portion comprising the unreacted C10 monoolefins and a C20+ olefin portion comprising the C20 olefin dimers;
- and
- hydrogenating the C20+ olefin portion to form polyalphaolefins comprising saturated C20 hydrocarbons.
A composition comprising polyalphaolefins, wherein the polyalphaolefins comprise 5,11-dimethyl-8-isopropyl pentadecane (Structure A), 5,8,13-trimethyl heptadecane (Structure B), 8-ethyl-5,6,11-trimethyl pentadecane (Structure C), 5-propyl-6,7,10-trimethyl tetradecane (Structure D), 6-isopropyl-9-methyl-5-propyl tridecane (Structure E), 6,9-dimethyl-5-ethyl-5-propyl tridecane (Structure F), 5-ethyl-7,8,11-trimethyl pentadecane (Structure G), 5,6-diethyl-7,10-dimethyl tetradecane (Structure H), 8,12-dimethyl-5-ethyl hexadecane (Structure 1), 5-ethyl-7,8,11-trimethyl pentadecane (Structure J), 5,7-dimethyl-9-ethyl-6-propyl tridecane (Structure K), and 7,10-diethyl-5,8-dimethyl tetradecane (Structure L), or combinations thereof.
A process comprising:
- contacting a composition comprising one or more branched C10 monoolefins with a solid acid catalyst to produce an oligomer product comprising unreacted C10 monoolefins and a C20+ olefin portion comprising C20 olefin dimers and other oligomers, wherein the one or more branched C10 monoolefins comprise 2-butyl-1-hexene, 3-propyl-1-heptene, 4-ethyl-1-octene, and 5-methyl-1-nonene, wherein the C20+ olefin portion comprises 85 wt % to 95 wt % of the C20 olefin dimers based on a total weight of the C20+ olefin portion without having to isolate the C20 olefin dimers from the other oligomers in the C20+ olefin portion.
