Abstract
A probe of a target identification system can be extended via a first lumen of a viewing instrument, such as for illuminating an area beyond a distal end of the viewing instrument via an optical path of the viewing instrument. An optical response to the illumination of the area can be received via an optical path of the probe and can be split from other optical signals of the optical path. The optical response information can be used to identify characteristics of a target and to adjust parameters of a working instrument such as a working instrument contemporaneously using the probe.
Claims20
A system for providing therapeutic treatment of an anatomical target, the system comprising:
- an energy source to deliver a therapeutic beam to the anatomical target;
- a light source to emit a light beam, different from the therapeutic beam, to the anatomical target via a first optical path;
- a beam splitter to collect an optical response signal in response to the delivery of the light beam to the anatomical target, and to pass the optical response signal through at least a portion of a second optical path different from the first optical path;
- an optical detector optically coupled to the beam splitter via an optical port, the optical detector configured to receive at least a portion of the optical response signal and to identify a characteristic of the anatomical target based at least in part on the received portion of the optical response signal;
- and
- an controller circuit configured to generate a control signal to a display unit to display information about the identified characteristic of the anatomical target to a user.
A method of providing therapeutic treatment of an anatomical target, the method comprising:
- delivering a light beam, generated by a light source, to the anatomical target via a first optical path;
- in response to the delivery of the light beam to the anatomical target, collecting an optical response signal from the anatomical target, and passing the optical response signal through at least a portion of a second optical path different from the first optical path;
- redirecting at least a portion of the collected optical response signal to an optical detector and identifying a characteristic of the anatomical target based at least in part on the redirected portion of the collected optical response signal;
- and
- controlling a display unit to display information about the identified characteristic of the anatomical target to a user.
