Abstract
The present invention relates to devices and methods for coating surfaces including surfaces of medical devices, in particular the coating of microprojections on microprojection arrays. The present invention also relates to print head devices and their manufacture and to methods of using the print head devices for manufacturing articles such as microprojection arrays as well as to coating the surfaces of microprojection arrays. The present invention also relates to high throughput printing devices that utilize the print heads of the present invention.

A method for coating a plurality of microprojections of a microprojection array, comprising:
- a) providing a biological fluid to a pumping chamber;
- and
- b) activating a piezoelectric device thereby deforming a membrane plate through a deformation clearance plate such that the membrane plate contacts the biological fluid in the pumping chamber and pushes the fluid out through a nozzle plate comprised of a plurality of nozzles and onto one or more of the microprojections of the microprojection array thereby coating a plurality of the microprojections with the biological fluid.
A method for coating a plurality of microprojections of a microprojection array, comprising:
- a) aligning a coating device above a microprojection array having a plurality of microprojections, the device comprising a piezoelectric actuator, a membrane plate, a deformation clearance plate and a pumping chamber;
- b) providing a biological fluid to a pumping chamber;
- and
- c) activating a piezoelectric device thereby deforming a membrane plate through a deformation clearance plate such that the membrane plate contacts the biological fluid in the pumping chamber and pushes the fluid out through a nozzle plate comprised of a plurality of nozzles which are in one-to-one correspondence with the microprojections on the microprojection array and onto one or more of the microprojections of the microprojection array thereby coating a plurality of the microprojections with the biological fluid.
