Abstract
A system and method for determining the stability of an arc during a plasma cutting operation based on a measured voltage of a nozzle of a plasma cutting torch is disclosed. The determined arc stability may be correlated with one or more process parameters of a cutting operation in order to determine the ideal values of the one or more process parameters for maximizing cut quality.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- initiating a cutting operation with a torch;
- monitoring a voltage of a nozzle over a period of time during the cutting operation;
- and
- determining an arc stability response based on a rolling time average of a rate of change of the voltage over the period of time.

A system, comprising:
- a power supply;
- a torch comprising a nozzle;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- monitor a voltage of the nozzle over a period of time during a cutting operation of the torch;
- and
- determine an arc stability response of the torch based on a rolling time average of a rate of change of the voltage over the period of time.
4 more elements
A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
- monitor a voltage of a nozzle of a torch over a period of time during a cutting operation of the torch;
- determine a rolling time average of a rate of change of the voltage over the period of time;
- and
- adjust a parameter of the torch based on the rolling time average of the rate of change of the voltage over the period of time.
