Abstract
Disclosed herein are chitosan hydrogels including one or more metal ions. The hydrogels have antimicrobial properties and can be used to treat wounds and other openings in the skin.

A biocompatible metal ion-chitosan hydrogel for treating wounds comprising:
- chitosan;
- and
- metal ions selected from the group consisting of silver ions, copper ions and combinations thereof;
- wherein said hydrogel has antimicrobial properties.
