Abstract
A battery module is disclosed having a string of series-connected battery cells, three terminals, a battery management system (BMS) circuit, and a voltage source converter (VSC) to selectively connect the positive and negative ends of the string of cells to the three terminals. The unique configuration of the battery module allows it to output power in DC, 1-phase AC, and 3-phase AC forms under the control of the BMS circuit. A power system is disclosed utilizing configurable battery modules to provide DC, 1-phase AC, and 3-phase AC power to one or a plurality of system components.
Claims10
A battery module comprising:
- a string of series-connected battery cells, the string having a positive end and a negative end;
- a first terminal, a second terminal, and a third terminal;
- a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) to selectively connect the positive end of the string of series-connected battery cells to a first of the first terminal, the second terminal, and the third terminal, and to further selectively connect the negative end of the string of series-connected battery cells to a second of the first terminal, the second terminal, and the third terminal.
A power system comprising:
- a system controller;
- a control bus, the system controller being communicatively coupled to the control bus;
- a power bus;
- a battery module further comprising:
- a string of series-connected battery cells, the string having a positive end and a negative end;
- a first terminal, a second terminal, and a third terminal, said terminals being coupled to the power bus;
- a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) to selectively connect the positive end of the string of series-connected battery cells to a first one of the first terminal, the second terminal, and the third terminal, and to further selectively connect the negative end of the string of series-connected battery cells to a second one of the first terminal, the second terminal, and the third terminal;
- a battery management system (BMS) circuit, the VSC being controllably coupled to the BMS circuit, said BMS circuit being communicatively coupled to the control bus, the BMS circuit further being configured to receive control signals from the system controller via the control bus.
