Stack access throttling for synchronous ray tracing

An apparatus comprising:

• ray tracing acceleration hardware to manage active ray tracing stack allocations based on a size of a memory storage;
• and
• an execution circuit to execute a thread to request a ray tracing stack allocation from the ray tracing acceleration hardware, the thread to populate one or more ray tracing stacks corresponding to the ray tracing stack allocation to the memory storage, comprising:
• responsive to a resulting size of active ray tracing stack allocation upon adding the ray tracing stack allocation fitting within the memory storage, permitting the ray tracing stack allocation.

A method comprising:

• managing, by ray tracing acceleration hardware, active ray tracing stack allocations based on a size of a memory storage;
• and
• executing, by an execution circuit, a thread to request a ray tracing stack allocation from the ray tracing acceleration hardware, the thread to populate one or more ray tracing stacks corresponding to the ray tracing stack allocation to the memory storage, comprising:
• responsive to a resulting size of active ray tracing stack allocation upon adding the ray tracing stack allocation fitting within the memory storage, permitting the ray tracing stack allocation.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium having program code stored thereon which, when executed by a machine, causes the machine to perform:

• managing, by ray tracing acceleration hardware, active ray tracing stack allocations based on a size of a memory storage;
• and
• executing, by an execution circuit, a thread to request a ray tracing stack allocation from the ray tracing acceleration hardware, the thread to populate one or more ray tracing stacks corresponding to the ray tracing stack allocation to the memory storage, comprising:
• responsive to a resulting size of active ray tracing stack allocation upon adding the ray tracing stack allocation fitting within the memory storage, permitting the ray tracing stack allocation.
