Methods and Systems for Radar Reflection Filtering During Vehicle Navigation

A system comprising:

• a vehicle having a radar and a camera;
• and
• a computing device configured to:
• detect, based on radar data, a first object located in an environment of the vehicle;
• determine image data lacks information corresponding to the first object;
• based on determining that the image data lacks information corresponding to the first object, identify a second object positioned between the vehicle and the first object and determining that the second object reflected one or more radar signals such that the first object appears in the radar data due to a self-reflection of the vehicle;
• and
• generate an output that identifies the first object as the self-reflection of the vehicle.

A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein program instructions executable by a computing system to cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

• detecting, based on radar data, a first object located in an environment of a vehicle;
• determining image data lacks information corresponding to the first object, wherein the image data is from a camera coupled to the vehicle;
• based on determining that the image data lacks information corresponding to the first object, identifying a second object positioned between the vehicle and the first object and determining that the second object reflected one or more radar signals such that the first object appears in the radar data due to a self-reflection of the vehicle;
• and
• generating an output that identifies the first object as the self-reflection of the vehicle.
