Abstract
A single-unit biotechnology method simultaneously recovers polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and triacylglycerides (TAGs). A method produces biomass in the form of a mixed microbial culture containing PHAs and TAGs. More specifically, certain steps occur in a single discontinuous sequential reactor.

A method for intracellular production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and triacylglycerides (TAG) in a mixed microbial culture, the method comprising the steps being carried out in a single sequencing batch reactor, and comprising:
- (a) inoculating activated sludge in the reactor,
- (b) operating a cycle of the single sequencing batch reactor, comprising:
- (i) feeding the microorganisms present in the reactor with a lipidic carbon source, the feeding being in pulses and under limiting nitrogen conditions,
- (ii) removing 50% of the mixture from the reactor, wherein said mixture contains the biomass with intracellular PHA and TAG, and,
- (iii) adding a stream containing between 0.9 and 2 times the stoichiometric amount of nitrogen necessary for microbial growth, and
- (c) repeating the method from step (b) in successive cycles.
