A composition comprising:
- dried and calcined catalytic particles comprising red mud and one or more additives, wherein the particles comprise at least about 50% red mud by weight.

A method of making a composition, the method comprising:
- mixing a slurry of red mud and one or more additives;
- drying the mixture at a first temperature;
- and
- calcining the dried mixture at a second temperature higher than the first temperature to form dried and calcined catalytic particles comprising red mud and the one or more additives.
