A method of treating major depressive disorder in a patient, where the patient is being treated with an antidepressant other than agomelatine but has failed to adequately respond to the antidepressant, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of (a) agomelatine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and (b) the antidepressant, wherein the patient prior to initiation of agomelatine treatment exhibits high EEG sample entropy using low gamma frequency range (30-40 Hz) electroencephalography.
