Abstract
Disclosed are methods for treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The method is directed to the biomechanical cause of AIS in the ventral portion of the interspinous ligament. Treatment includes chemically lysing and/or cutting the abnormal tethering structure, thereby allowing the AIS spine to decrease its deformity with ongoing day-to-day activities, without requiring bracing and without requiring instrumented and/or fusion surgery.
Claims16
A method for treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, comprising:
- unilaterally exposing a lamina;
- creating a laminotomy in a spinous process to provide access to the corresponding interspinous ligament;
- and
- without disrupting the corresponding ligamentum flavum
- (i) injecting a chemolysitic agent at a ventral portion of the interspinous ligament at a location posterior of the corresponding ligamentum flavum, and/or
- (ii) cutting at least a ventral portion of the interspinous ligament at a location posterior of the corresponding ligamentum flavum.
